ERIE, Colo. - The Pepperdine women's golf team began Thursday's first round of the NCAA West Regional in good shape, as the Waves are tied for seventh place. The top eight teams will advance to the NCAA Championships.

The seventh-seeded Waves, host Colorado and Tulsa all shot a 9-over 297 at the par-72 Colorado National Golf Course today. They've got a three-stroke advantage over the 10th-place teams, Texas Tech and Baylor. Illinois and California are just a stroke ahead, tied for fifth place at 296.

The second round is on Friday and the third and final round is on Saturday.

Freshman Alina Ching (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) had a very clean round, with 15 pars, one birdie and two bogeys. With a 1-over 73, she's tied for 18th place.

Sophomore Liv Cheng (Auckland, New Zealand) had a string of three birdies over four holes on her back nine, helping her to a 2-over 74 and a tie for 32nd place. Her team-high three birdies came on the 12th, 13th and 15th holes.

Sophomore Grace Na (Alameda, Calif./Alameda HS) and freshman Somin Lee (Denver, Colo./Overland HS) are both tied for 42nd place after opening-round 75s. Both players had one birdie during their rounds. Senior Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) is tied for 82nd place after a 78.

Pepperdine is aiming to make the NCAA Championships for the 11th time in school history.
